Le Marche
Lying on the eastern side of Central Italy between the Apennines and the Adriatic, Le Marche (pronounced ‘markay’), is becoming the destination for holidaymakers seeking out the real Italy.
Where else can you admire masterpieces of renaissance art and architecture, trek over picturesque mountains, search out simple yet delicious food and wine or relax on fine beaches. Le Marche has all of these without the hassle of mass tourism and is blessed with local people who welcome stranieri (foreigners).
With a daily direct flight to Ancona from Stansted with Ryanair there has never been a better time to discover Italy’s best kept secret.
Cingoli
Our local town (9km) is charming with its almost intact city walls its fine restaurants and cafes all set in medieval quarters with quaint and silent streets. Due to its elevation, (630m) the town offers a famous panoramic view that has earned it the nickname “The Balcony of Le Marche”. Close by (5km) is lake Cingoli, the ideal palce for relaxing, canoeing, pedalos and for people who just want a few hours of peace.
Verde-Azurro Aquapark
Just a short journey away (5km) is the Aquapark in San Faustino with slides, a swimming pool with waves, hydro massage bath and sporting activities, open from June to September.
Treia
Another local gem (15km) lies on a long narrow sandstone ridge surrounded with medieval walls, towers and gates. Treia boasts one of the most beautiful squares you will find in Le Marche with nice bars and outdoor dining in the summer.
Macerata
Delightful university town (25km) famous for its annual open-air opera festival. Elegant and on a human scale it is one of the leading cities in Italy as regards quality of life.
Monte Conero and its beaches
Sirolo and Portonuova are untypical Marche bathing resorts (40km). Nestling under the high Monte Conero are rocky coves and limestone cliffs unlike any other stretch of the Adriatic coast.
Frasassi Caves
The Frasassi caves (50km) are some of the most intriguing limestone caves you will ever visit.
Monti Sibillini
Marches most impressive mountain landscapes are to the south of us (56km). These peaks are often covered with snow even in late spring.
Loreto
One of the world’s most important religious shrines is the Sanctuary of the Holy House (43km). Some say that the house of the Virgin Mary was transported, by angels, from the Holy Land to this hill with its view over the Adriatic.
Monte…..something
But perhaps the greatest attraction of Le Marche is discovering the small delightful hilltop, medieval towns almost invariably called Monte… something.
